- Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
- Abstract
- During the Middle Ordovician the paleocontinent Baltica was covered by an epicontinental sea, wherein cool-water carbonates were deposited. The carbonate deposits covered most of the oscandian paleobasin, but due to erosion only a small portion is preserved today. Ordovician limestone at the Gullhögen quarry, Billingen, Västergötland is preserved due to protection from overlying Permian dolerite sills. The quarry is an exceptionally fitting place to study the strata of the Gullhögen Formation (Darriwilian), which is of interest due to its lithological differences from coeval limestone throughout Sweden. The shale-rich Gullhögen Formation more resembles strata belonging to the Norwegian facies, in particular the Elnes Formation in the Oslo... (More)

The quarry is an exceptionally fitting place to study the strata of the Gullhögen Formation (Darriwilian), which is of interest due to its lithological differences from coeval limestone throughout Sweden. The shale-rich Gullhögen Formation more resembles strata belonging to the Norwegian facies, in particular the Elnes Formation in the Oslo area. Studies of thin sections revealed a detailed picture of the microfacies of the limestone beds of the Gullhögen Formation. Point counting of grains, cement and matrix, together with calculation of the relative abundance of different groups of fossils, provided an overview of variations in the properties of the studied formation. The results reveal distinct stratigraphic variations in both lithology and fauna of the Gullhögen Formation, which show tendencies towards deposition in successively shallower environments upwards. This trend appears to be superimposed by shorter periods with deposition of coarser sediments. The depositional environment has been interpreted as a calm, rather distal, part of the paleobasin, with repeated higher-energy influence. In comparison to the ”Furudal Limestone” of the same age in the Siljan region in Dalarna (central Sweden), the Gullhögen Formation seems to have record a more varied environment. A synoptic comparison with the Elnes Formation in Norway reveals many similarities, but further research is needed. (Less)
