Nationsbygge av och för vem? En studie om välfärdschauvinism i Sverige

- Abstract
- Between 2014 and 2015 Sweden accepted, by its standards, an unprecedented amount of asylum seekers into the country. The total effect which that had on the country politically and socially may not be fully understood yet but it represented a shifting point in Swedish politics. The image of Sweden as open, tolerant and liberal had been challenged and the political response was a strict tightening of immigration policy. This thesis paper is concerned with how people who see themselves as constituent parts of a nation choose to make distinctions between themselves and people who do not belong... (More)

The total effect which that had on the country politically and socially may not be fully understood yet but it represented a shifting point in Swedish politics. The image of Sweden as open, tolerant and liberal had been challenged and the political response was a strict tightening of immigration policy. Out of this environment a hitherto rare political tendency could be seen in prominent Swedish newspapers. This political tendency is welfare chauvinism. This thesis paper is concerned with how people who see themselves as constituent parts of a nation choose to make distinctions between themselves and people who do not belong to the nation. The survey questions are about immigration, its perceived effects on the country, and the welfare state. By comparing survey answers from the relevant time periods a nuanced portrait of societal attitudes can be seen. Though concrete conclusions are difficult to draw one way or the other, further avenues for study to pick up where this study finished are discussed. (Less)
