An analysis of International Community Fire Protection Programs and their possible implementation in Sweden

- Abstract
- The community fire protection programs, FireWise from the United States and FireSmart of Canada, aim to help protect individuals and communities from wildfires crossing into urban areas and destroying structures. As wildfires increase in severity and intensity in Sweden, and are predicted to continue doing so, it is important to investigate the possibility of implementing a similar program in Sweden.
The two most important aspects to consider to lessen the risk that a house ignites when exposed to a wildfire, is that the house has fire-resistant cladding and its immediate vicinity is free from fuel clutter. Sweden has a large portion of houses and structures within the WUI, both in communities and as isolated structures. It was found that providing individual recommendations concerning structure protection in the WUI is important and could be done from a North American model with very little changes. It is recommended that a small-scale bottom-up community fire protection is implemented by local fire services under the supervision of MSB. (Less)
