Abstract
In 2000, a 5-kilometer-long exercise path called Elljusspåret was constructed in Skrylle, Sweden. Excavations of the soil on the right side of the path were made to install lampposts. A large number of Primula veris emerged from the excavated soil. This re-evaluation investigates if the P. veris population still favours the excavated side and if it could be due to change in the soil horizon chemistry. I assessed the abundance of P. veris along Elljusspåret together with data from 5 other monitoring projects from the past 10 years. The most recent inventory of the P. veris population was made in 2014 and revealed that P. veris favoured the excavated side. I examined the soil temperature, pH, conductivity, and moisture contribution on P.... (More)

The most recent inventory of the P. veris population was made in 2014 and revealed that P. veris favoured the excavated side. I examined the soil temperature, pH, conductivity, and moisture contribution on P. veris abundance, on excavated and unexcavated soil, and in different forest types, whilst looking for any changes over time. Furthermore, I assessed the species richness and species composition along the path by dividing it into groups of distance to the path, sides, and forest types. Then identified the main reason for P. veris establishment and the main drivers of species composition. P. veris showed a preference to the excavated side and more individuals were recorded in deciduous forest. Temperature has a significant correlation to the number of P. veris rosettes, while the other abiotic factors appear to have weaker correlation to the population’s appearance, although, it cannot be completely ruled out that pH and moisture might influence the P. veris population. In species composition, the species diversity is higher near the path than plots further into the forest. Higher diversity was also noted in deciduous forests and regarding species composition the plots differed more compared to other forest types. It is plausible that the excavated side generated more vegetational heterogeneity and turning of the soil in a forest environment could be a tool for restoring and increasing biodiversity, but in this case, it does not have a strong effect on the P. veris, 20 years later. The establishment in Skrylle can be seen as an example where a relatively low degree of human disturbance has a positive effect on the plant's establishment in the area. (Less)

Gullvivor älskar motionsspåret i Skrylle, Skåne

(More)
