Greening the Liberals of Europe? A study of the Liberals' response to the Green Wave

- Abstract
- This study aims to investigate a potential convergence between the Green and Liberal parties of Europe regarding cultural issues of the GAL-TAN-scale, such as the environmental issue in particular. The focus on this issue is inspired by the increased debate and focus on the issue in relation to the 2019 European Parliament elections and by the theory of issue entrepreneuring strategies of the Green parties. The liberal parties reactions to this, in particular, is interesting because of the liberal values being used to describe the GAL-dimension of cultural policies and are seen as fundamental for the European Union, while in practice liberal stances might not reflect this ideological categorisation because of the diversity within the... The liberal parties reactions to this, in particular, is interesting because of the liberal values being used to describe the GAL-dimension of cultural policies and are seen as fundamental for the European Union, while in practice liberal stances might not reflect this ideological categorisation because of the diversity within the ideology as well as he complexity of the classification of the liberal party family. The findings of the study only contribute with partial support for the hypotheses by only suggesting a convergence between some of the Liberal and Green parties across Europe, such as the Swedish Centre party, a Liberal party with an Agrarian background, and the Greens has occurred. This suggests that other factors, such as an historical involvement in environmental issues, potentially have an effect on the convergence. (Less)
