Maktlösa eller pådrivare från vänster?: En studie av radikala vänsterpartiers påverkan på konventionella partier

- Abstract
- This paper utilizes MARPOR’s data between 1990–2021 and ordinary least squares regressions to investigates whether radical left parties have any influence on mainstream parties, if it differs between position and issue salience and whether their influence is contingent on issue. Three research questions are formulated to examine, with the help of both spatial and issue salience theory, whether the radical left influence the party competition in two issue domains: welfare and multiculturalism.
The paper’s result shows how there is no association between radical lefts’ position and issue salience and mainstream parties’ position and issue salience, in both domains. The paper’s result shows how there is no association between radical lefts’ position and issue salience and mainstream parties’ position and issue salience, in both domains. The paper shows that this is caused by two different dynamics inhibiting in the issue competition. The welfare issue is dominated by a high salience and competition in the middle of the left/right dimension. The radical lefts inability to influence parties in the issue domain of multiculturalism is mainly driven by populist radical right parties. Different dynamics of party systems enable and prevent parties from influencing the party competition.
Spatial and issue salience theory are compatible and highlight different aspects of party competition. The paper demonstrates that some of the spatial theory’s main assumptions are too broad and not applicable on single issues. (Less)
