Abstract
After 9/11, the US had a military presence in Afghanistan for 20 years between 2001 and 2021. However, in 2021 this military presence was terminated amid surging unrest in Afghanistan and the Taliban reclaiming power. This means that the US political administrations have had to explain to Americans why the military presence was necessary and then why it was not necessary anymore. Therefore, this thesis aims to study the legitimization of the US military presence in Afghanistan and how it changed between 2001 and 2021. Specifically, the legitimization in speeches by the US president aimed at Americans is examined with a qualitative textual analysis of speech transcripts or scripts. Specifically, the legitimization in speeches by the US president aimed at Americans is examined with a qualitative textual analysis of speech transcripts or scripts. Theoritizations about strategic narratives will be used to study the legitimization since they can be a way to legitimize. Furthermore Reyes’ (2011) theory about types of legitimization will be used to further show how the legitimization has changed. The conclusions reached are that the legitimization changed from one based on a bipolar worldview, framing the US as a protector of values and emphasizing protection of both Afghanistan and the US to one based on a multipolar worldview, a US that promotes its national interests and the protection of the US.
