Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Abstract
Previous research has established the relationship between economical and psychological variables such as indebtedness and mental illness. The present survey aimed to illuminate the private economy of young adults and relate it to mental illness, impulsivity and coping. The survey was digitally distributed to a representative sample of young adults (n = 2057) during October 2021. Statistical analyses were made to enlighten differences between participants who had taken loans for consumption, had economic difficulties or personal debts and those who did not. Psychological variables that were measured consisted of probable clinical anxiety/depression, loneliness and impulsivity. Also, the practice of coping strategies and the financial... (More)

Also, the practice of coping strategies and the financial literacy of the sample were studied. Finally, the impact of the Covid-19-pandemic on young adults’ health and private economy was examined. Measurements used consisted of HADS, DJGLS, BriefCOPE and questions formulated by the author concerning private economy. The results indicated that those who had probable clinical anxiety/depression to a larger extent had taken loans for consumption and had experienced economic difficulties. Likewise, those who had difficulties concerning their private economy reported a higher incidence of symptoms of anxiety/depression. The results also indicated significant differences concerning impulsivity, financial literacy, loneliness and coping between those who had experienced economic difficulties and those who did not. The Covid-19-pandemic did not solely worsen the situation of young adults. The results of the study strengthen the relationship between economy and mental illness that already has been established in former research and emphasizes the importance of increased awareness and prevention both from governmental agencies, health care and citizens.
