Abstract
The case of Bertil Ströberg has repeatedly been called one of Sweden's most remarkable criminal cases. The indictment against Ströberg from 1983 claims that he committed grave espionage against Sweden on behalf of Poland. Ströberg says that he is innocent of the crime, and fought until his death to get his case reopened in the Supreme Court. That Ströberg would be innocent is explained by the fact that he was subjected to a conspiracy by a foreign power. If that is the case, then the goal of the action is never to get at Ströberg as a person, but to mislead the Swedish intelligence service to put their time, money and resources on the wrong things. And even though almost 40 years have passed since Ströberg was arrested and prosecuted, the... (More)

If that is the case, then the goal of the action is never to get at Ströberg as a person, but to mislead the Swedish intelligence service to put their time, money and resources on the wrong things. And even though almost 40 years have passed since Ströberg was arrested and prosecuted, the case continues to engage in various forms of media due to its many strange circumstances. Despite its media impact, there is no research on the case, and it is thus the purpose of the study to contribute to this. The MICE theory is a classic theory in what motivates an individual to spy. New research in the field has, however, been added in recent years. So within the framework of this study, the new findings have been integrated with the traditional MICE theory into a new theory - MICE+. With the help of the MICE+ theory, a congruence analysis of the case is carried out in an attempt to clarify Ströberg's possible motives for committing the crime he was charged with. The result of the study with the extended theory is that it contributes to a larger catalog of explanations to the case, which broadens the picture of it compared to what emerges with the traditional MICE theory. But since the results are scarce, it’s not possible to draw any sharp conclusions from it. (Less)
