Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
Previous research on trauma treatments has focused mainly on effective treatment methods from a quantitative perspective. The purpose of this study was therefore to qualitatively explore what psychologists’ view as important in a successful trauma treatment with individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder. Interviews were conducted with ten licensed clinical psychologists, who all have clinical experience from working with trauma treatments. A thematic analysis resulted in three themes: Courage, willingness and containing, The interpersonal encounter and Not just one way forward. The participants explained that as professionals they must have courage to ask about the trauma, explore the trauma thoroughly as well as to be able to contain... (More)
Previous research on trauma treatments has focused mainly on effective treatment methods from a quantitative perspective. The participants explained that as professionals they must have courage to ask about the trauma, explore the trauma thoroughly as well as to be able to contain the client’s story. Furthermore, it takes courage and motivation from the client to be able to approach the trauma. The participants underlined the therapeutic alliance as essential to the treatment's outcome, and stressed the urgency of the therapist being present, curious, reliable, transparent, clear, responsive, and competent when seeing the client. Finally, the participants emphasized the importance of flexibility and a holistic perspective when working with clients suffering from PTSD. This included perceptiveness to the client’s needs and adjustments within the psychological trauma treatment as well as to include other efforts beyond the psychological treatment. This study gives insight to what psychologists in a Swedish context find important in a successful trauma treatment. Further research in the subject area, including the clients’ perspectives, is requested. (Less)
