- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to examine health care social workers’ and psychologists' perception of counseling (stödsamtal), how jurisdictional work can be seen within counseling and what significance the jurisdictional work has for the health care social worker’s professional identity. The method chosen was semi-structured interviews with four health care social workers and four psychologists, all operating within child habilitation in Skåne, Sweden. Both professions are responsible for parental support and counseling. The study has its basis in professional theories. Concepts such as professionalism, experience-based knowledge, jurisdiction and professional identity have been used to analyze the collected empirical data. The result shows that both professions find counseling as a broad, and sometimes ambiguous, task that consists of a mix of theories and methods. Psychologists seem to use a more theoretical based knowledge, while health care social workers rather base their counseling on experience-based knowledge. The professionals agree on that in counseling, relationship is more important than method. In comparison to previous research there is no border dispute between the health care social workers and the psychologists regarding the parental counseling, they complete rather than compete. Even so, the health care social worker can be interpreted to win the field of parental counseling due to their practical, and societal, knowledge, but without a battle. Within the jurisdictional work the health care social worker is seen as broad, personal, and accessible. Though, when assigning a case to someone, the choice is more often based on a person with a certain experience rather than profession. The big culprit pointed out by the professionals is lack of time, which is seen as the biggest obstacle for cooperation and professional practice. (Less)
