Abstract
This thesis examined a new variant of the halo effect, which we call personality-based competence halo. It concerns personality description influencing the judgment of competence. The study investigated whether there was any difference in the strength of the personality-based competence halo depending on whether the individual being assessed belongs to an in- or outgroup, whereby age was the variable of interest for group affiliation. The experiment had a between-subject design: 2 levels of personality (higher and lower on the Big Five model) x 2 ages of the stimulus subject Kim (older, 51 years old, and younger, 29 years old) x 2 ages of the respondents (older, above 40 years of age, and younger, 18-40 years old). Respondents (a... (More)

Respondents (a convenience sample N = 223, mean age = 38.9, SD = 16.2) completed a survey where they had to read one of four possible descriptions of the fictional character Kim. After having read through the description, participants were instructed to estimate Kim's competence in certain areas. The results showed that the personality descriptions strongly affected how people assessed competence. It further showed that there was an ingroup effect in the older participants. However, this effect was barely noticeable in the younger participants. To conclude, we use personality information as a basis for assessments of competence without any rational reason to do so, and the age of the respondent and the person being assessed moderates this effect. However, it is still unknown exactly how we make personal assessments. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
