Abstract
The interest in commercial drones is growing significantly and companies are eager to develop new value propositions connected to drone flight. How the industry will develop is still unclear, sparking interest from corporations in exploring the industry’s future. The purpose of the master thesis, is to explore how the future of the drone industry could look like and to identify what services the telecommunication industry could provide to it. This is accomplished by investigating future potential business areas and how they are interconnected.
The thesis is based on a interviews as the main method followed by a questionnaire, the empirical data is gathered through 13 interviewees operating in the current industry. A theoretical model was... (More)

The thesis is based on a interviews as the main method followed by a questionnaire, the empirical data is gathered through 13 interviewees operating in the current industry. A theoretical model was derived by conducting an extensive literature review, with the purpose to lay the foundation for how the future industry could look like. The theoretical model is based on a combination of the approach scenario planning, the framework business model canvas, and research in the field of emerging industries.
The study concluded four scenarios, representing four alternative futures for the drone industry. By analyzing the four scenarios and their business areas, common denom- inators were found, which ultimately led to identifying four key business areas. The key business areas are: (i) Developers of Hardware & Software, (ii) Supporting drone functions, (iii) Operative support functions, and (iv) Infrastructure. Finally, the identi- fied key business areas and the four scenarios were used to pinpoint five possible value propositions that the telecommunication industry could provide to the future drone industry. Imagine you could foresee the future. Would not that be great? In this master
thesis, we will attempt just that, to predict the future of the drone industry.

potential business areas and how they are interconnected. This is done by
collecting qualitative and quantitative data and the applying the derived the-
oretical model.
The study concluded four scenarios, representing four alternative futures for
the drone industry. By analyzing the four scenarios and their business areas,
common denominators were found, which ultimately led to identifying four
key business areas. The key business areas are: (i) Developers of Hardware
Software, (ii) Supporting drone functions, (iii) Operative support functions,
and (iv) Infrastructure. Finally, the identified key business areas and the four
scenarios were used to pinpoint five possible value propositions that the te-
lecommunication industry could provide to the future drone industry. The
value propositions were derived from service groups that the drone industry
could utilize from the telecommunication industry. Namely, infrastructure &
connectivity, regulatory services, enabling services, and USSP.
The drone industry is viewed as an emerging industry with the hopes of gene-
rating high revenue in the future. With the above-mentioned results, actors in
the drone industry will be able to adapt to the development of the industry.
Being able to plan what aspects of their business to focus on strategical-
ly. For actors within the telecommunication sphere, they will gain knowledge
of how their services should be adapted to fit the future of the drone industry. (Less)
