The aim of this study was to explore how healthcare professionals within addiction care frame and explains how they identify, respond to, and organize intervention for women who experienced violence in close relationships. By using a qualitative basis this study collected its empirical material by conducting three semi-structured interviews and one focus group interview of six people with professionals from two psychiatric outpatient clinics focusing on addiction care. The empirical data was analyzed through theoretical approach of ‘Frame analysis’ and ‘Why?’ to understand how the professionals comprehends and give reasons for their practice. The result showed that the responsibility to identify victims of violence often falls on the individual professional and how questions about violence are mainly intuitively asked with the main reason that it require an alliance. Moreover, the staff frame these situations as emotionally heavy because of the complex issues and frustrating situations. There was a framing that interventions were mainly adapted to the situation and the individual, and that there was a need for both cooperation and collaboration. Overall, the study highlights how there is a willingness to help, while at the same time the professionals framing and explanation is not always based on the current guidelines, which can potentially stand in the way of the patient’s safety.
