Abstract
This qualitative study aimed to shed light on how active members of the climate movement Extincion Rebellion Sweden apply civil disobedience as a tool for political change, and how they in the application of civil disobedience relate to the political and legal system. Six semi structured interviews were conducted, which then were analyzed using John Rawl’s theory of civil disobedience, as well as Ewick and Silbey’s theory of legal consciousness.

The results showed the government's lack of action regarding the imminent climate crises to be the key factor for the motivation of the method civil disobedience. Furthermore did the interviewees described, at large, civil disobedience in a way that is broadly consistent with Rawls’s five... (More)
This qualitative study aimed to shed light on how active members of the climate movement Extincion Rebellion Sweden apply civil disobedience as a tool for political change, and how they in the application of civil disobedience relate to the political and legal system.

Furthermore did the interviewees described, at large, civil disobedience in a way that is broadly consistent with Rawls’s five criteria of civil disobedience; 1) the act must be public, 2) the act must arise with nonviolence, 3) the act must be political, 4) the act must break the law, and 5) the perpetrator of civil disobedience must be willing to take the consequences. The results showed moreover “against the law” and “with the law” to be the primary legal consciousness applied by the interviewees, in regard to Ewick and Silbey’s theory of legal consciousness. This is an interesting and adversal approach, where the law and the legal system are in other words considered to be both an obstacle and a means in the fight for climate justice. (Less)
