Abstract
Mental health problems are prevalent and impairing in childhood and adolescence. Earlier research shows multiple links between different mental health symptom dimensions and different areas of everyday functioning (e.g., school, friends), but there is a dearth of studies investigating multiple symptoms dimensions and multiple areas of functioning at the same time. This thesis investigated links between three symptom dimensions (depression, social anxiety and panic) and three areas of functioning (school functioning, social functioning and family functioning). 585 children and adolescents completed an online survey and links between symptom dimensions and functioning were estimated using network analysis. There was a unique link between... (More)

This thesis investigated links between three symptom dimensions (depression, social anxiety and panic) and three areas of functioning (school functioning, social functioning and family functioning). 585 children and adolescents completed an online survey and links between symptom dimensions and functioning were estimated using network analysis. There was a unique link between social anxiety and social functioning as well as a unique link between depression and school functioning, which was stronger than the links between social anxiety/panic and school functioning. Further, a unique link between depression and family functioning was found, but not a unique link between depression and social functioning, which is in contrast with earlier research on the subject. In sum, mental health problems are linked to lower everyday functioning in children and adolescents, with different kinds of mental health problems being linked to different functional impairments. Future research should include measures of both internalizing problems and externalizing problems and focus on longitudinal relationships between multiple variables of symptoms and functioning using representative samples with multiple sources of data. Abstract (Swedish)
fungera i vardagen.
(More)
