- Abstract
- Studies indicate that crime is a common occurrence in Swedish schools and that schools create their own living law regarding managing crime. This study aims to analyze the approach of the teachers that makes crucial decisions when dealing with crime in school. The goal is to find out how different norm perspectives, that were found to be relevant when conducting the literature review, has affected the living law. - Studies indicate that crime is a common occurrence in Swedish schools and that schools create their own living law regarding managing crime. This study aims to analyze the approach of the teachers that makes crucial decisions when dealing with crime in school. The goal is to find out how different norm perspectives, that were found to be relevant when conducting the literature review, has affected the living law. The aim is also to investigate how organizational factors affect how teachers handle crime.The study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with teachers and the result was analyzed using Lipsky's theory on street-level bureaucracy and the different norm perspectives. The results show that the teachers lack of resources impacts their ability to handle crimes and violations correctly. Further on, most teachers involved stand firm that schools should report more crimes to the police and discuss in line with the legal norms regarding the use of suspension, however, the teachers convey that some violations are best solved in school using methods in line with the norms regarding social pedagogy. The teachers also recognize the students involved as “victim” and “perpetrator” and state that all methods used should be in the best interest of both. To improve crime management in school, teachers request clearer guidelines, more resources and to include specialized professions in school. (Less)
