Abstract (Swedish)
Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the relation between mind wandering and personality. Prior research on the subject has shown varied results on correlations between specific personality traits and mind wandering. Mind wandering frequency was measured using Mind Wandering Questionnaire and personality was measured using Big Five Inventory in the form of a survey. Five hypotheses were formulated; mind wandering will show a negative correlation with extraversion, agreeableness and conscientiousness, as well as a positive correlation with neuroticism and openness. Responses from 455 participants generated results showing significant correlations between agreeableness and mind wandering (r = -.166, p = < .001), conscientiousness and mind... (More)

Five hypotheses were formulated; mind wandering will show a negative correlation with extraversion, agreeableness and conscientiousness, as well as a positive correlation with neuroticism and openness. Responses from 455 participants generated results showing significant correlations between agreeableness and mind wandering (r = -.166, p = < .001), conscientiousness and mind wandering (r = -.536, p = < .001) as well as neuroticism and mind wandering (r = .481, p = < .001), supporting three of the hypotheses. A significant correlation was found between age and mind wandering (r = -.351, p = < .001). Multiple regression analyses showed that 39.7% of the variance in mind wandering can be explained by conscientiousness, neuroticism and age (F(3, 451) = 99.0, p < .001). No significant correlation was found between either extraversion or openness and mind wandering, in contrast to some previous findings. The results suggest a relationship between certain personality traits and mind wandering, with age playing a significant role in modulating both personality and mind wandering. The impact of age has seldom been explored in prior research and can therefore be considered for future research as well as practical applications, for example in aiming to reduce mind wandering to increase productivity and attention.
