Abstract
The purpose of our thesis has been to increase the knowledge about the need of investigating children who may have ADHD in order to contribute to more children receiving the support and understanding they need to be able to succeed in school. In our research, we have investigated which initiator that initiates ADHD investigations in the majority of cases for children in primary school and elementary school at the ages 0-16. We have also looked into what the gender distribution of the students who have been investigated looks like and focused on how old they were when their investigations started. After examining these three variables separately, we compared them with each other and examined the relationships between age and gender as well... (More)
The purpose of our thesis has been to increase the knowledge about the need of investigating children who may have ADHD in order to contribute to more children receiving the support and understanding they need to be able to succeed in school. In our research, we have investigated which initiator that initiates ADHD investigations in the majority of cases for children in primary school and elementary school at the ages 0-16. We have also looked into what the gender distribution of the students who have been investigated looks like and focused on how old they were when their investigations started. After examining these three variables separately, we compared them with each other and examined the relationships between age and gender as well as initiator and gender. We contacted 45 randomly selected school counselors who provided information on a total of 67 students that we have reported in our survey. Many of our hypotheses turned out to match the results of our study, among these were the majority of boys' investigations initiated by schools while the majority of girls' investigations were initiated by their parents or guardians, and that more investigations were initiated for boys than for girls in general.
