Abstract
The dimensions of cultural economics have been more and more discussed recently. This study aims to analyze the relationship between social tolerance and economic growth. Previous studies have discussed two main ideas. Firstly, social tolerance creates a creative environment that promotes innovation and entrepreneurship. Secondly, social tolerance lowers barriers to entry in human capital accumulation and in the workplace. With panel data from 64 countries over the time period 1981–2020, three regression analyses have been performed to study the impact of an open and accepting environment. The tolerance index incorporates two research programs from the World Values Survey, which examine attitudes towards homosexuality and people with a different race. By modeling the regression model based on economic growth theory, control variables were added to avoid spurious results. The chosen control variables are population growth, investments, human capital and initial GDP per capita. The main result is that openness and acceptance towards homosexuality have a positive and significant effect on economic growth, while tolerance towards people with a different race exhibits a positive but not significant effect.
