Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
The aim of the present study was to examine the correlations between procrastination and several psychological variables; stress, coping, academic motivation, self-efficacy and sense of coherence. Furthermore, the purpose was to examine differences between university students who are studying different educational programs and independent courses in a swedish population. Lastly the aim was to examine prediction of procrastination by the mentioned variables. Previous studies have shown correlations between procrastination and the chosen variables on an individual level however what is unique about this study is the exploratory approach including the collected examination of these variables at the same time. The respondents (N=151) answered a survey consisting of mainly well established and valid instruments. The results showed that procrastination
significantly correlated positively with stress, adaptive and maladaptive coping. Procrastination was significantly negatively correlated with self-efficacy and sense of coherence. No significant difference was found between students studying the two different educational programs and students attending independent courses. The five variables which were significantly correlated with procrastination were chosen to create a regression model which proved to be significant in predicting procrastination. Maladaptive and adaptive coping were the two variables contributing the most to the model and prediction. The exploratory approach and the findings are of value to the increased gain of knowledge in regards to procrastination. It is also of value for professions, for example student counselors, who face students who are experiencing that procrastination is a problem for them in their every day and study related life.
