Abstract
The political and socioeconomic consequences of US-led sanctions on Iran have been extensively researched. Despite Iran's importance in natural resources such as oil, research on the domestic economic consequences of sanctions, particularly on Iranian industries, is largely disregarded. When the domestic perspective of the sanctioned country is factored out, socially recurring effects like self-sufficiency are overlooked. Thus, this paper aims to examine the evolution of Iran’s industrial development following the imposition of US-led sanctions in 1979, from a pro-sanction perspective, focusing on the oil and gas industry, the industrial and mining sector, the automobile sector, and the construction sector. By taking a domestic viewpoint,... (More)

By taking a domestic viewpoint, this paper clarifies Iran's often misunderstood and oversimplified economic landscape. According to the paper’s qualitative historical analysis and empirical evidence, sanctions have had unforeseen negative impacts on Iran, but also had unintended positive consequences, such as driving industrialization, domestic production, and self-sufficiency, consequently encouraging industrial development. Despite the fluctuations as a result of US-led sanctions, the aforementioned industries have seen tremendous gains since 1979, with several industries doubling their production since the 1990s. Iran must, however, continue to localize research, production, and technology if it is to achieve long-term industrial independence and positive economic development. (Less)
