Abstract
In this study an evaluation of the ways in which the shopping mall NOVA Lund can improve its current waste management practices was conducted. This was done because NOVA plans to upgrade their waste management system. A survey was conducted where the staff of the 68 stores and 7 restaurants were inquired on the current system. The stores were asked to rank what kind of waste they encounter the most, and if they are satisfied with their current opportunities to dispose of it correctly. Alongside this, an examination of the current facilities and their capacities was conducted. The results of this study were compared and contrasted with current research. It was found that in order adhere to the current legislation under which it operates,... (More)

Alongside this, an examination of the current facilities and their capacities was conducted. The results of this study were compared and contrasted with current research. It was found that in order adhere to the current legislation under which it operates, NOVA should facilitate better opportunities for plastic recycling. Currently, large parts of the plastic waste cannot be sorted out and ends up being burned for energy instead of recycled. The current Swedish legislation and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals both push towards a waste management system based on the waste hierarchy. To pursue the sustainability goals more waste should be recycled than is being sent to be burned. The highest step on the hierarchy is prevention and this is the most effective action to take. But this step is something that NOVA cannot change directly. The way they could reduce the amount of waste generated is to promote their stores to demand less wasteful packaging from their suppliers. These pursuits of waste reduction by the stores should be rewarded to encourage further waste reduction. What NOVA can improve directly is to ensure the stores can sort their generated waste efficiently. Especially plastic waste since this is the second most common type of waste generated in the mall and the current opportunities for sorting are poor. (Less)
Popular Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
