Abstract (Swedish)
Title: Inclusion, a symbolic capital
This study aims to showcase, using a case study of the Modern Museum of Art in Malmö, in what ways state-funded museums are put in conflict with politically held ideals and art agenthood in the field of the arts. With the central theories deriving from Pierre Bourdieu, this study argues that the museum is an agent who is held to standards set by the art field and is dependent on this field to receive legitimization from other co-agents.
At the same time, state- funded museums are held to politically influenced agreements in order to receive their funding – agreements which do not necessarily align with the ideals and structure of the art field. The study finds that while the state-funded museums, like the Modern Museum of Art, are obliged to maintain cultural capital through the representation of popular and Western art, their ideals concerning inclusivity must be “outsourced” to projects like the Modern Museum in Malmö. This is evidenced by the differentiated representations (by way of policy and other documents) between the modern museum in Stockholm and that in Malmö. This phenomenon is at least partly due to the simultaneous interactions of various field of power and influence which affect the goals of the state-funded joint art institution. (Less)
