- This study explores the qualitative aspects of remittance-sending. The research contends that there is a gap in qualitative research where remittance-senders are concerned and argues that it is essential to understand the experiences and perceptions of these individuals to comprehend how remittances affect and are affected by the senders and their social networks. This research utilizes semi-structured interviews with seven Syrian migrants settled in Sweden to explore how they understand and are affected by remittance-sending. Furthermore, the research considers the data in relation to its implications for the development process. The theoretical framework mainly builds on the Migration Network theory and the concepts of transnationalism and belonging and analyzes the findings accordingly. The central conclusion of this paper is that social factors, including guilt, and a sense of belonging, are important determinants for remittance-sending. Therefore, it can be contended that remittance-sending is a highly socially embedded, complex concept about more than just money transfers. It includes remittance-sending individuals burdened and motivated by social connections. Hence, the practice of remittance-sending is not linear and should not be treated as such when we explore the concept as a method for development. (Less)
