- Corruption is widely recognised for distorting incentives and impeding economic growth. Less acknowledged are the effects of corruption on environmental issues such as the implementation of environmental regulation. This interesting set of conditions, inspires a quantitative cross sectional analysis of the relation between perceived level of corruption and environmental performance using data from 2020. The ten year change in environmental performance from 2010 to 2020 will also be analysed in order to determine what conditions best enhance environmental performance. By exploring the mediating factors of economic development, income inequality and regulatory enforcement as channels of impact, this study finds that corruption does have a small negative effect on the level of environmental performance.
