On-the-Job Search and Discouragement during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Uganda

Abstract
Given the widespread underemployment in Africa, on-the-job search represents a key channel through which individuals seek better employment oppor- tunities that value their skills and competences. However, empirical research on the determinants of on-the-job search has almost exclusively been conducted in advanced economies. The study aims to identify the determinants of on-the-job search among disadvantaged workers in Uganda during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings reveal greater discouragement in the period following the two COVID-19 total lock- downs, as employed job seekers revise their reservation wages downwards in 2022.
