Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Abstract
We live in a world where a continuous increase of internet usage and mental illness is a reality for the Swedish population. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relations between mental illness, social needs and parasocial interactions (non-reciprocal behaviors and relationships with media profiles) among Swedes who use the livestreaming service Twitch.tv. The study aimed to investigate whether the level of parasocial interaction predicts the level of mental illness, and whether there is an interaction effect between parasocial interactions and social needs regarding mental illness. The survey was established through a digital self-report survey that was answered by Swedish participants who were recruited from gaming-centered... (More)

The study aimed to investigate whether the level of parasocial interaction predicts the level of mental illness, and whether there is an interaction effect between parasocial interactions and social needs regarding mental illness. The survey was established through a digital self-report survey that was answered by Swedish participants who were recruited from gaming-centered forums, Facebook groups and discord servers (N=64). The results of this study showed that the level of parasocial interaction predicted the level of mental illness. They were positively related, indicating that the higher the level of parasocial interaction, the higher the level of mental illness. However, the result was no longer significant when social needs were controlled for. The results also showed that there was no interaction effect between parasocial interactions and social needs regarding mental illness. This result is of interest in order to increase the understanding of how parasocial interactions can affect the mental illness of the Swedish population.
