Abstract
The aim of this essay is to perform a media study of how the identity of” immigrants” is constructed and which discourses about “immigrants” appear in one of the Swedish newspapers, Aftonbladet. With this study, I intend to shed light on how the discourse reflects and affects the broader marginalization in the Swedish society. This research is limited to the time period between January 2015, and December 2021 and the chosen country is Sweden.
With the help of discourse analysis, in combination with a qualitative and social constructivist approach, together with postcolonialism and orientalism and the design theory, I have analyzed 20 articles that were published between 2015-2021 in Aftonbladet. With the help of discourse analysis, in combination with a qualitative and social constructivist approach, together with postcolonialism and orientalism and the design theory, I have analyzed 20 articles that were published between 2015-2021 in Aftonbladet. In the results of the essay, the following questions have been answered: How are the identities of “immigrants” constructed in the analyzed material? and What discourses emerge in the analysis? The analysis
shows that the identity "immigrant" is most often associated with negative aspects. And that the integration discourse is dominant, without being independent of the other two discourses, the suburbs and problems. Within the discourses, the “immigrant” appears almost exclusively in connection with social problems, which is interpreted to stem from postcolonial thoughts about the Others. (Less)
