Through the German federal system, each federal state is in charge of their educational system. Different governments mean different parties with different objectives, which are affected by ideology. Through the introduction of a combined school subject of economics and politics in North Rhine-Westphalia (in 2021), I suspected neo-liberal values of the government. Thuringia, with a left-green government, was chosen as a comparison. Exploring the construction of education in the two federal states as well as the examining of the social-economic curricula through Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), neo-liberal values by uniliteral usage of purpose-bound education became discernible in North Rhine-Westphalia. Thuriniga in contrast relied on purpose-free education. Concluding, ideology has an impact on construction, discourse and with that on actual education and thus has to be reflected upon, especially if it has, like neo-liberalism, an extensive impact on the educational concept.
