The aim of this study has been to achieve a greater understanding of school counselors' arguments regarding their professional role in relation to the pupils' learning and education. Previous research show a correlation with pupils' health and school achievement, which makes school counselors' reasoning regarding the same matter interesting. In this study, qualitative interviews have been conducted with six different school counselors in the southern region of Skåne. All school counselors are actively working in elementary schools with children of different ages. The aim of this study has been to understand the school counselors assignments, both direct and preventive and to understand the school counselor's perspective on the relation between health and school performance. Theories regarding professions and organizational features influencing the leeway have been used to understand the reasoning gained from our interviews. The questions that have been formulated to answer the purpose of the study contain school counselors' reasoning regarding cooperation, the possible relation between health and school achievement and their own assignments. The study shows that school counselors all agree on a relation between health and academic achievement but work differently trying to achieve the same goal: pupils' health which is explained as important for their academic achievement. Also, the study shows that school counselors generally strive towards working more preventively and less individualistically, which can be confirmed in previous research. (Less)
