This qualitative study is based on interviews with seven Afghan refugees in Sweden, and the aim is to shed light on their experiences and perspectives regarding their integration journey in Sweden. To clarify, the focus of the study is to gain knowledge on the significant factors and barriers related to the integration process. Thereby it is possible to gain a deeper understanding of the integration process from some of those who have lived in the reality of it in Sweden. The results of this study indicate that learning the Swedish language is one of the most significant factors for a successful integration as a refugee. Moreover, occupation and education, social relations and personal self-integration are among the significant factors for the Afghan refugees integration in Sweden. Whereas, factors such as discrimination and stereotypes, lack of support from authorities and negative self image are among the barriers that can prevent a successful and efficient integration. Finally, the results of the study have been analyzed in relation to Diaz’s integration model, the “Us vs. Them” theoretical concept and the concept of “Belonging”. Moreover, by examining the integration process from a refugee perspective, a more in-depth knowledge has been gained regarding this essential process within migration which has been a challenging issue for Swedish society.
