“Shame keeps worthiness away by convincing us that owning our stories will lead to people thinking less of us. Shame is all about fear. We’re afraid that people won’t like us if they know the truth about who we are, where we come from, what we believe, how much we’re struggling”.

Abstract
Research has identified the central role played by shame within a wide spectrum of public health issues including several common and serious threats to psychological and physical public health including depressions, dependency of substances, eating disorders, suicide, violence and sexual abuse. Shame has been described as “the master emotion of everyday life” but it is an emotional condition which impacts our lives and societies in silence, since one of its characteristics is that we are reluctant to openly talk about it and we therefore lack knowledge about this phenomenon. The purpose of this is therefore to study the phenomenon of shame - what its causes are, how it manifests itself, how individuals are coping with it and how shame... (More)
Research has identified the central role played by shame within a wide spectrum of public health issues including several common and serious threats to psychological and physical public health including depressions, dependency of substances, eating disorders, suicide, violence and sexual abuse. Shame has been described as “the master emotion of everyday life” but it is an emotional condition which impacts our lives and societies in silence, since one of its characteristics is that we are reluctant to openly talk about it and we therefore lack knowledge about this phenomenon. The purpose of this is therefore to study the phenomenon of shame - what its causes are, how it manifests itself, how individuals are coping with it and how shame resilience can be developed - based on the stories that have been published by anonymous individuals on three different open discussion forums on the internet.
The method used for this study is qualitative with an abductive approach. The data is analysed by a thematic process in accordance with the methods developed by Braun and Clark.
The result of the study of the causes of shame is heterogeneous as the data indicates a variety of triggers - ranging from sexual abuse and bullying to psychiatric diseases and eating disorders. The section on how shame manifests itself shows a series of strategies of how to prevent the social environment from learning about the individual’s conditions. These strategies include refraining from interacting with others, isolation, withholding a false facade and self-harm. The final section of the study is dedicated to the development of shame resilience as a measure against the negative impact of shame on individuals’ lives. This section shows how the participants in the study act in order to free themselves of their shame by facing their fears and developing the courage needed to express their concerns. (Less)
