Maternity/Parental leave policies and wages of men and women: A study of Germany from 2002-2012

- Abstract
- In recent years, there has been a lot of discussion in Germany about the compatibility of work
and family. Politicians have invested greatly in this area, and reforms have repeatedly addressed
problems. In particular, the 2007 reform of the "Bundeselterngeld- und Elternzeitgesetz"

specifically, the study aims to show how the wages of working men and women evolved before
and after the reform. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to demonstrate that generous
maternity and parental leave can affect earnings. The study examines the effects using
longitudinal data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) 1984-2019. Comparing
wages before and after the policy from 2002 to 2012 for both genders is done using descriptive
statistics and panel data regressions. The analysis shows that over both periods women tend to
earn less than men and therefore there is an impact of such measures on wages. (Less)
