Abstract
The Garden City, and the architectural streetscape is a master thesis in architecture, completed in the spring semester of 2022 at Lund School of
Architecture. Ebenezer Howard introduced the Garden City vision in 1898. Since then, countless neighborhoods, suburbs, and cities have developed inspired by the concept. The purpose of the garden city was by the beginning to raise the standard of living for workers and the less affluent who lived in the dark, dense, grey, big cities. Today, the old garden cities are some of the most sought-after areas to settle in. The purpose of the garden city was by the beginning to raise the standard of living for workers and the less affluent who lived in the dark, dense, grey, big cities. Today, the old garden cities are some of the most sought-after areas to settle in. The thesis has aimed to increase the awareness of the architectural qualities in the garden cities that form the foundation of their continued popularity. Through theoretical analysis and study visits, the work explores how the garden city’s characteristics, qualities, and definition
have developed over time and internationally, specifically in Scandinavia. Through explorative design, the thesis investigates how the qualities of
the garden city can be preserved and strengthened in contemporary housing developments.

The thesis begins with a description of the origins and theory of the garden city. Relevant literature is presented and contributes to a greater understanding of the garden city as originally a political, economic, urban planning and architectural model. The following chapter presents the completed study visits in Copenhagen, Oslo, and Stockholm. Along with the historical
background, a catalog of pictures and illustrations displays and highlights defining components of the garden city. The gained knowledge from the
early analyzes and study visits become tools in a case study design placed on a site in Oslo. The thesis project ends with a reflection on the presented theory, analysis, and design proposal. The project aims to highlight the qualities of the garden city in contemporary discourse, set more clear boundaries for the definition of a garden city, and not risk a bland concept. (Less)
