Abstract
This essay explores morality and its connection to the context and historicity of its surrounding in relation to literature. The essay is based on the analysis of Dostoevsky’s book Crime and punishment published in 1866 and is centred around the main character Raskolnikov and his argumentation in defending his morally questionable actions. The analysis shows how Raskolnikov oscillates between the need to justify his actions and the belief that it is unnecessary to justify them. His argumentation and actions are explained by both theories and the essay concludes that Raskolnikov in the end views the world in a social constructivist way. It is however not up to this essay to decide the foundation of morals, the way it is bound to society, and history and how it influences our legal system. It is thus concluded that the reader themselves must take a stand and decide for themselves which way they wish to view morals; even so, literature written throughout history will be there to give us an insight into how society was and how it has changed over time.
