(2022) PSPR14 20221Department of Psychology
- Abstract
- The purpose of the study was to investigate and compare the relationship between self-esteem, body image, and BMI in young adults in the Swedish and Macedonian cultural context. In addition, the study investigated gender and age differences as well as differences in education regarding all variables in both contexts. A convenience sample of 64 participants from Sweden and 65 participants from North Macedonia between the ages of 18-29 participated in the study. Sociodemographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements and self-estimation regarding self-esteem and body image were collected. Two psychological instruments were used to measure self-esteem (Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale) and body image (Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents and... (More)

A convenience sample of 64 participants from Sweden and 65 participants from North Macedonia between the ages of 18-29 participated in the study. Sociodemographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements and self-estimation regarding self-esteem and body image were collected. Two psychological instruments were used to measure self-esteem (Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale) and body image (Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults). Correlation analyses, linear and multiple regression analysis, Fisher's r-to-z transformation, t-test for independent samples and one-way independent ANOVA were used to analyze the data. The results showed a positive relationship between self-esteem and body image that was equally strong in both cultures. In contrast, a negative relationship between body image and BMI was found only in the Macedonian group. The regression analyzes showed that 38% and 46% of the variance in body image was predicted by self-esteem in the Swedish group and by self-esteem and BMI in the Macedonian group, respectively. The results showed gender differences regarding BMI and differences in education regarding self-esteem in the Macedonian group. In the Swedish group, the results showed age differences regarding body image and BMI. The results of the study point out the importance of self-esteem, body image and BMI for the individual's mental health from a cultural perspective, which must be considered in psychological work with young adults. - Abstract (Swedish)
Korrelationsanalyser,... (More)
