Abstract
Mental health disorders are common in adolescence, and measures of mental health have typically relied on retrospective self-reports that are influenced by measurement errors, such as recall bias. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is a relatively new range of methods that assesses experiences as they occur in daily life. EMA enables reliable and ecologically valid measurement of emotions, thoughts, behaviors and context as it operates very close to when and where the experience actually occurs. However, it is unclear whether EMA is a feasible method to measure emotion processing in Swedish adolescents. EMA enables reliable and ecologically valid measurement of emotions, thoughts, behaviors and context as it operates very close to when and where the experience actually occurs. However, it is unclear whether EMA is a feasible method to measure emotion processing in Swedish adolescents. In this thesis, we therefore examined the feasibility of an EMA measurement battery in adolescents. Feasibility was operationalized as compliance of reporting on the EMA questionnaires and acceptability as how the participants experienced the battery and participation in the study. Fifteen (N = 15) Swedish adolescents were recruited and consented to complete EMA questionnaires on emotion processing four times per day for 14 days. We evaluated compliance, experience of participating and completion of the study. Out of 24,780 items in total, the participants reported on 19,663 items (79.4%). All participants completed the study, and understandability of items and the project was overall high. Participants were less likely to respond to the EMA questionnaires on days off. In sum, findings indicate that EMA of emotion processing is a feasible and acceptable method in Swedish adolescents. With minor modifications of the timing of the questionnaires, the feasibility and compliance can be further improved. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
