Abstract
India is forecast to overtake China as the world’s most populous country by 2023. Despite diligent efforts to gain independence from the British, today’s India faces new challenges: the creation of a national identity, achieving superpower status and the growth of Hindu nationalism. The aim of this essay is to investigate the use of political myths by Prime Minister Modi. Using speeches delivered by Modi during India’s National Day celebrations, the essay seeks to clarify, with an actor-centered idea analysis, how the myths of threat, leader, people and emerging power are actualized. The results showed that Modi portrayed poverty, corruption and natural calamities as threats to the country’s population. He portrayed himself as a strong... (More)

He portrayed himself as a strong leader using populist rhetoric and emphasising decisiveness. To unite the Indian people, Modi used references to the freedom struggle and the national flag. The myth of the emerging power showed that Modi portrayed India as an emerging power by pointing to the country’s favourable demographics and stressing the importance of a good international reputation. In conclusion, the Prime Minister’s ”modi operandi” can be compared to a mathematical equation, where the leader plus the people minus the threats seems to be equal to the emerging power. (Less)
