Abstract
Research and theories show that politics in today’s society is mediated and for most of the citizens the media image is the only perception of politicians that exists. Therefore, studying how politicians are portrayed is essential in the journalistic field, this due to the changes in political journalism and the growing entertainment focus in journalism. SVT’s Valet Forever is a hybrid genre program, both a part of the Swedish election coverage in journalism as well as a comedy program. It contains eight episodes including interviews with eight Swedish top politicians. The questions for them are based on internet forums – for instance Flashback and Familjeliv. Because the questions are based on gossip and rumors, they also tend to belong to the private sphere rather than the public. Within the private sphere, intimate questions concerning appearance, family and relations, sexuality, personality and feelings along with lifestyle and interests are asked. Accordingly, this research aims to look at the intimization of the politicians and to detect any possible gender differences. It also examines how humor functions in relation to initimization in the program. Consequently, it is evident how many and what type of intimate questions are asked to the different politicians. As a result, the study argues that intimization creates a transition into asking questions of private character as well as evens out the balance of power making the politicians become private in their answers too. Additionally, the study concludes that gender differences are noticeable in the questions about appearance that the women receive and it is also the female politicians that questions these differences. Furthermore, humor in relation to intimization has a way of concealing the political question while at the same time can create an intimate relation between politician and voter. (Less)
