- A fundamental restructuring of the economic system is a necessary step toward a truly sustainable society. To make this possible, new policy proposals within the economic sector need to be developed and existing ones analysed, with potential for improvement brought up. This thesis investigates how well the proposal of Sovereign Money in Sweden correlates with the aims of degrowth. Using four principles of degrowth as an analytical framework, an analysis of the report Förstatliga Pengarna (Orrefur, 2019) and three interviews with knowledgeable advocators for the proposal was made. The results show that the reform is expected to break the dependence of economic growth, reduce economic inequalities and even out concentrations of power in society, thus causing social justice, democracy, and well-being to rise. When it comes to reducing production and consumption to lower the environmental footprint, however, the outcome is less clear. The conclusion is that Sovereign Money is needed in a future degrowth society, but that it needs to be thoroughly complemented with additional policy. Globally unequal resource flows, old (and new) wealth, and the definition of green investments need to be further addressed, making a full embrace of degrowth a strengthening force for the Sovereign Money objective.
