- Abstract
- During the summer of 2020, Ebba Busch, the party leader of the Swedish Christian democrats, bought a house from 81-year old Esbjörn Bolin. This quickly turned into a legal fight, with Esbjörn Bolin claiming that he was pressured into selling the house. The event turned into an almost two-year long media scandal, with many twists and turns.
In an era and a society where the media shape most people’s opinion of what happens around them, scandal journalism can have a big impact on public opinion. In an era and a society where the media shape most people’s opinion of what happens around them, scandal journalism can have a big impact on public opinion. When a political scandal happens, the media play a big role in deciding how the public will view its participants, and the images chosen to represent the scandal is a large part of the reporting and the message that is conveyed. This paper studies how the scandal of Ebba Busch's house purchase was visualised in the media, and whether the newspapers were able to construct a particular narrative through images. To achieve this, a semiotic methodology is applied to analyse the images in four Swedish newspapers: Expressen, Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet. Further, the fields of narratology and visual rhetoric, as well as research on scandal journalism and photojournalism, is used to discuss the results of the semiotic analysis.
While there were some differences between the four newspapers and their choices, this study shows that Ebba Busch was mostly portrayed as a public figure and a powerful politician. Esbjörn Bolin was portrayed as a private individual and an old man who was sad to lose his house. This led to the narrative that Ebba Busch was taking advantage of Esbjörn Bolin, and she was portrayed as a villain. (Less)
