- Abstract
- This paper aspire to deepen the knowledge and understanding of how Afghan unaccompanied refugees experience their integration process depending on the decision from the Migration agency. The paper is based on four semistructured interviews. In 2015 a large number of Afghan unaccompanied refugees arrived to Sweden to seek asylum in order to protect themselves from the occurrences of their origin country Afghanistan.
There is a clear juxtaposition regarding the process of integration depending on their migratory status, which signifies in the participants experiences of discrimination and exclusion. There is a clear juxtaposition regarding the process of integration depending on their migratory status, which signifies in the participants experiences of discrimination and exclusion. As the participants who received a rejection experienced several different types of discrimination, in contrast to the other participant who immediately received a permanent residence and never experienced it.
This paper highlight and compare certain struggles the participants encounter depending on their residence status and how they navigate the process of integration in the Swedish society. The major findings of this essay is how a decision from the Migration Agency is crucial to these boys experience of exclusion and discrimination. The undocumented participants were told to return, however they refused and decided to fight against the system. Today all of them have a permanent residence status which implies that structure matters, but it’s not everything. (Less)
