Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze how medical professionals, working in multidisciplinary teams, viewed the counselor's role, status, and collaboration in psychiatry settings. The method for the study was qualitative semi-structured interviews with seven medical professionals from two psychiatry clinics in southern Skåne. The interview material was coded and thematized using content analysis. We used Julie Drury Hudson's model of professional knowledge and Thomas Brante’s professional theory as our theoretical framework for the analysis. Results showed that the medical professions valued the counselor’s role as a coordinator but also acknowledged that the role description is unclear. We noticed that there were different opinions on how... (More)

Results showed that the medical professions valued the counselor’s role as a coordinator but also acknowledged that the role description is unclear. We noticed that there were different opinions on how the counselor's role can become clearer, some believed that specialization offered clarity, while others in contradiction, believed that it rather made the counselor's role more unclear and identified it with them being "mini-psychologists". The counselor's status was generally considered to be lower, while some professions thought the status was high or equal to other professions. The study, therefore, showed that the professions have divided opinions about the counselor's status. The collaboration worked impressively well despite the challenges, some felt that the collaboration was depending on the counselor´s personality rather than profession-related things. (Less)
