Abstract
Social work education has been subject to discussion throughout history. The competence of newly graduated social workers is questioned in facing complex social problems and new challenges in society. The purpose of this study has been to shed light on how newly graduated social workers’ theoretical knowledge and practical skills are perceived by managers in the exercise of authority who work closely with active social workers. Social work education has been subject to discussion throughout history. The competence of newly graduated social workers is questioned in facing complex social problems and new challenges in society. The purpose of this study has been to shed light on how newly graduated social workers’ theoretical knowledge and practical skills are perceived by managers in the exercise of authority who work closely with active social workers. This is a qualitative interview study with seven leaders and managers within social authority work. The analysis and interpretation of the results contributed by the empirical material are done from a social constructivist perspective. To explain how our interviewees create routines and approaches to the construction of a newly graduated social worker, we used the concept of reducing cognitive dissonance. The study points out that the theoretical knowledge and practical skills that newly graduated social workers receive from education do not correspond to the demands of professional life. At the same time, our study shows that our interviewees have found strategies in the form of acceptance and by reasoning that personal characteristics rather than education are the basis for the ability to become a professional.
