Abstract
Economic difficulties and indebtedness are associated with impoverished physical and psychological health. The present study aimed to explore how the economic situation of young adults is connected to feelings of personal relative deprivation, tendencies to make social comparisons as well as life aspirations, well-being, and perceived loneliness. How the usage of social media is related to these variables was also investigated. This cross-sectional survey study included young adults (n=166) in the age 18-29 who studied a post-secondary education. The survey included five validated scales and questions formulated by the authors. The results indicated that the group with economic difficulties had significantly lower well-being and reported... This cross-sectional survey study included young adults (n=166) in the age 18-29 who studied a post-secondary education. The survey included five validated scales and questions formulated by the authors. The results indicated that the group with economic difficulties had significantly lower well-being and reported higher levels of loneliness. This group also reported significantly higher levels of PRD and tendencies to make social comparisons. These latter results also applied to the participants who had a high social media usage. These results imply that economic difficulties and indebtedness as well as mental illness amongst young adults should not be seen as predominantly individual problems and that preventive action should involve social and societal factors. Practical implications for the present study are to raise awareness about the connection between economy, indebtedness, and mental illness, both in clinical contexts as well as in other governmental agencies. Abstract (Swedish)
(More)
