Abstract
Animals have become more commonly used in social work, yet there is no definitive evidence of the positive effects of animals on a group level. The aim of this study was to understand the function and role of animals in social work, specifically within the context of daily activity centers for people with different kinds of disabilities. We wanted to understand why the animals were used and what difference they made in the work with people participating in the daily centers. The method we used was qualitative, as we performed semi-structured interviews with nine staff members at three different daily centers which all based their practice around animals. For the analysis, we used Aaron Antonovsky’s salutogenic theory and Marc Zimmerman’s... (More)

The method we used was qualitative, as we performed semi-structured interviews with nine staff members at three different daily centers which all based their practice around animals. For the analysis, we used Aaron Antonovsky’s salutogenic theory and Marc Zimmerman’s empowerment theory. The study found that animals contributed to a range of aspects in the centers. They helped the participants develop social and communication skills created feelings of meaningfulness and created a safe environment for the participants to talk about their feelings. Further, the animals were used to help participants regulate their emotions, created a sense of community, and made the participants feel a sense of responsibility. Lastly, the animals created a structure within the daily activity centers. (Less)
