The empirical material was gathered from seven qualitative interviews with first-line managers in Swedish social services and analyzed with Goffman's dramaturgical theory and Scheff's theory of social bonds. The main conclusions were that social support is a multifaceted phenomenon that demands a flexible approach from the first-line managers when social support is given to social workers. Social support, with its different aspects, was deemed effective to aid social workers in their work although it has its boundaries. Furthermore, when social support is deemed insufficient, first-line managers tend to care for the organization rather than focus on individual needs. First-line managers should maintain balanced levels of closeness and distance to their social workers to be able to achieve a good and effective application of social support. (Less)
