Abstract
The past couple of decades have seen an increase in threats and violence from clients toward social workers. One of the most important parts of social work is the workers' meetings and interactions with the clients to ensure that the client can get access to the help and resources that they need. The aim of this study has been to depict the difference in the occurrence of positive and negative meetings, certain client behaviour during these meetings, and what resources the social workers have access to handle these. The method that has been used is a quantitative survey distributed to social workers in different agencies in the public sector via mail. The past couple of decades have seen an increase in threats and violence from clients toward social workers. The aim of this study has been to depict the difference in the occurrence of positive and negative meetings, certain client behaviour during these meetings, and what resources the social workers have access to handle these. The method that has been used is a quantitative survey distributed to social workers in different agencies in the public sector via mail. The collected data has been used in a series of univariate and bivariate analyzes in the program SPSS. The theoretical framework that has then been used to analyze the collected data is Aaron Antonovsky’s theory of a Sense of Coherence (SOC). The main finding of this study is the importance of job experience to handle difficult and stressful situations. Results showed that those with more job experience at their workplace weren't affected as much by disrespectful behaviour from clients. For those workers that did feel affected by clients' behaviour, many expressed that support from colleagues is an important factor in their handling and coping with the situation. (Less)
