- Abstract
- The purpose of the study has been to investigate young adults’ experiences of being unemployed in more than six months, which in a national context is being accounted as long- term unemployment. To answer the purpose of the study two questions have been asked:

’In what way are the young adults affected by not having a job?’ and ’What feeling are related to the young adult’s situation as unemployed?’.
To implement the study, I have used a qualitative research interview method, through semi- structured interviews. Five interviews have been conducted to capture a deeper understanding for the informant’s experiences of being long-term unemployed. Theoretical concepts that have been the foundation for the study are four attitudes and approaches to unemployment; inclusion and exclusion; stigma and shame. The theoretical concepts have been implemented in order to analyse the collected material. Deductive and inductive coding have been used to review the material. Based on that, I have come up with two themes that represent the experiences and feelings of the informants considering their situation as unemployed. The themes read as follows: ’I am not like everyone else, everyone else is better than I am’ and ’The feeling of not fitting in’.
The results show that young adults are affected in a negative way by unemployment and the effects are made visible by lower self-esteem, feelings of shame and isolation and feelings of not fitting in. (Less)
